A 5-year-old girl named Aletha is in critical condition and may have suffered permanent brain damage after being attacked by a dog that wandered into her family’s backyard in Independence, Missouri. The tragic incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, and is still under investigation, with possible criminal charges pending, according to Detective Jack Taylor of the Independence Police Department.
Aletha was playing in her fenced backyard when the unrestrained dog entered the area and viciously attacked her, causing severe injuries. In a statement from the police, it was confirmed that Aletha sustained “severe lacerations” during the attack and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Animal Services responded swiftly, detaining the dog, which has since been euthanized. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any legal action will be taken.
A GoFundMe page set up by Aletha’s father’s employer, Andy Davies, revealed the extent of her injuries. Aletha suffered a skull fracture, a broken collarbone, and a broken rib as a result of the mauling. She was placed in a medically induced coma as doctors work to save her life in the intensive care unit. Davies wrote, “Because of the loss of blood and oxygen, doctors fear Aletha may have suffered permanent brain damage.”
As the family awaits more news on Aletha’s condition, the community has rallied around them, raising funds to support her medical care. The case has left many questioning how such a tragedy could occur and has raised concerns about dog ownership and responsibility.
As the investigation continues, Aletha remains in intensive care, fighting for her life, while her family holds onto hope for her recovery.
