An animal rescue organization in Phoenix, Sky Sanctuary Rescue, is earning praise for stepping in to save an 8-week-old border collie puppy named Ollie from euthanasia. The puppy had been brought into an Arizona emergency animal hospital with a severely injured leg after a horse stepped on him, crushing it beyond repair. While the hospital suggested surgery to save the leg, Ollie’s owners requested euthanasia. The decision didn’t sit well with the veterinary staff, who reached out to Sky Sanctuary Rescue for help.

Sky Sanctuary Rescue, a donation-based organization, quickly stepped in and agreed to take Ollie in. They shared the heartwarming news on Instagram, thanking the community for their support that made it possible for them to say “yes” to the puppy’s second chance at life. Unfortunately, Ollie’s leg was too damaged to save, and the rescue team had to perform an immediate amputation. The rescue group assured supporters that despite the amputation, Ollie is “otherwise healthy.”

“Thanks to your donations, he’s alive, recovering in the ICU, and expected to head home later today,” Sky Sanctuary Rescue wrote in a post. Ollie, who is now recovering in the intensive care unit, will need a new family. The organization made it clear that Ollie “absolutely will not” be returned to his original owners. They are currently accepting adoption applications on their website.

Sky Sanctuary Rescue also highlighted the breed’s qualities, noting that border collies are known for being “loyal” and “brilliant.” Border collies are often considered the smartest dog breed, thriving in structured households with lots of training and activity. The organization emphasized that this breed makes great family pets, especially for families with children who can teach them new tricks.

The Instagram post showcasing Ollie’s journey went viral, with over 1.7 million views, 57,400 likes, and 844 comments as of Thursday. One viewer wrote, “We have a three-legged dog and it’s remarkable how little it impacts him. He’s playful, he’s mobile, and has a wonderful quality of life.” Another commented, “What a cutie patootie….those eyes!! He deserves life and love ~ thank youuu!!!”

Ollie’s story also received recognition from the animal hospital that treated him. They posted, “Thank you for finding a way to say YES! We’re always grateful for your support and for everything you do within our community.”
