A whippet has been left homeless and in grief after both of his owners died.
Alfie spends most of his days at the Hull Animal Welfare Trust crying in confusion at his family’s tragic passing, Hull Live reports.
The shelter volunteers who made a social media appeal to find a new home for the little dog were overwhelmed at the response.
They said they had been inundated with offers to rehome him.
Their Facebook appeal said: “Meet Alfie, he is desperately looking for a home after both of his owners sadly passed away and he is now left without a place to call his own.
“As you can imagine he is very confused about his life at the moment and he is grieving for his owners spending most of his time unsettled and crying.
“Alfie is an 11-year-old whippet who needs a quiet home with no children where he will always have company, lots of love and a comfy bed.
“We aren’t sure if he would live with another dog as he has always been an only pet. If you think you can offer Alfie a loving home please contact us on 01430 423986 between 11am and 2pm.”
Hundreds of people heartbroken for the dog wished Alfie well online.
One animal lover said: “I really hope this lovely old chap finds a home very soon. I have a 15yr old dog, and the very thought of him ending up in kennels if anything happened to me just breaks my heart.
“If I lived closer to Hull, I would take him without a doubt.”
Another said: “Poor old lad, he must be so upset and confused. We have two whippets of our own, they are the most gentle, loving, loyal and intelligent of dogs.
“I do hope he finds somewhere nice really soon bless him.”
The shelter then followed up with an update, thanking people for the massive response.
The post said: “Thank you for everyone who has contacted us offering Alfie a home, we have been unexpectedly overwhelmed with offers and will now be going through the applications to find him a suitable match.
“Please appreciate that we are incredibly busy here at the centre prioritising looking after all of the animals in our care and we do not have the staff to respond immediately to calls and messages.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding, we are working as hard as we can!”
