Oprah Winfrey made waves with a powerful and emotionally charged speech on the third day of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, taking a moment to address recent controversial comments while highlighting the historic nomination of Kamala Harris for president.

On Wednesday, August 21, Winfrey, 70, surprised the crowd at Chicago’s United Center with her unannounced appearance. Her speech quickly became a standout moment of the convention, as she celebrated the Democratic nominee and addressed the divisive rhetoric that has been circulating.

Praising Kamala Harris’s journey to becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Oprah declared, “Soon, we will teach our children about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father — two idealistic immigrants — grew up to become the 47th president of the United States. That is the best of America.”

But it was her response to Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance’s disparaging remarks about Joe Biden that truly captured attention. Vance had previously referred to Biden in a derogatory manner as a “childless cat lady,” a comment that didn’t sit well with many. Winfrey, known for her eloquence and poise, didn’t let the remark go unaddressed.

“When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowners’ race or religion — we do our best to save them,” Oprah said, drawing a direct parallel to the current political climate. Then, with a playful yet pointed tone, she added, “And if the house belongs to a so-called childless cat lady, well, we make sure to get the cat out, too.”

Winfrey’s nearly 15-minute speech resonated with the evening’s theme of “freedom,” which she seamlessly wove into her broader message of unity, resilience, and the true essence of American identity. Her words served as both a celebration of Harris’s nomination and a call for unity in the face of divisive rhetoric.

As the convention moved forward, Oprah’s remarks stood out not just for their substance, but for the way they encapsulated the spirit of the moment — a reminder that in the fight for America’s future, no one should be left behind, not even the proverbial cat.
