No Bra Day – a Day to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

According to the Internet, yesterday was ‘No Bra Day’ – a day to raise breast cancer awareness and show support for all women affected. Or at least, according to some men with access to a Twitter account who are championing it. #NoBraDay follows in the footsteps of the Ice Bucket Challenge and the no make-up selfie campaign by encouraging social media users to get in on the act for a good cause. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the hashtag is meant to inspire and motivate all bra wearers to ditch the lingerie for a day and go bra-less.

Where it differs to the Ice Bucket Challenge and no make-up selfie campaign is the slightly creepy and exploitative nature of it. Plus it’s unclear what the actual goal of going bra-less is. There’s no mention of fund-raising or backing by any breast cancer charities, and sparse information on self-examination.

Some were Cheered By the Prospect.

Some Users Pointed Out if You’re Going to Do Something, Do it Properly.

Other Users Questioned the Credibility of the Campaign.

National No Bra Day

In June, the #HoldACokeWithYourBoobsChallenge came under fire for duping hundreds of women into posting provocative pictures of themselves online. Originally started to poke fun at the Ice Bucket Challenge and no make-up selfie campaign, it soon escalated, with people believing it was all for charity. As for No Bra Day, for the most part it seems women are finding other ways of raising support and awareness, with a reassuring absence of ‘no bra pictures’ being posted.
