A man is behind bars after police say he stabbed a woman several times and attempted to throw her over a railing Saturday night at Miami International Airport.

Alexander Paul Love, 29, is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a first-degree attempted murder charge, according to jail records. Love was booked into the jail Sunday afternoon, told CBS News.

The attack occurred “without provocation” just after 11:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of MIA’s Concourse J in the pre-security area, police reported. The victim managed to escape to the third floor, where officers found her and took Love into custody. Investigators also recovered a knife at the scene.

In a news release, police confirmed that the woman remains in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center. “Detectives are in the process of speaking with the subject, and the investigation continues,” police stated on Sunday.

Public records reveal that Love, who is from Ohio, was previously arrested there on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in 2016. That case was dismissed shortly thereafter. It is unclear whether Love currently resides in South Florida, though court records indicate he was arrested in Miami-Dade on low-level offenses in 2023.

Amid the initial chaos of the stabbing, police were called to the scene for a reported active shooter, which turned out to be a false alarm. As a result, all passengers in concourses H and J were evacuated and subsequently re-screened. According to an MIA spokesperson, airport operations returned to normal around 1:30 a.m.

This violent incident has raised concerns about airport security and passenger safety. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

The swift response by law enforcement and airport officials helped prevent further harm, but the trauma of the event has left a significant impact on those involved and witnesses at the scene. As the investigation continues, there is a heightened focus on understanding the motives behind this unprovoked attack and ensuring such incidents do not occur in the future.

Alexander Paul Love faces serious charges that could lead to a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The community and authorities are now focused on supporting the victim in her recovery and bringing justice to a senseless act of violence at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
