A Memphis man allegedly pulled a gun on his mother and assaulted her boyfriend after being asked to pay his tab at an East Memphis restaurant on his birthday, according to Memphis Police.
Mason Hibbs, 23, is facing charges of aggravated assault and simple assault following the incident on July 9 at TJ Mulligans on Kirby Parkway.
Officers responded to the scene after a woman reported that she had walked to the parking lot to ask her son, Hibbs, who was sitting in his car, to settle his bill. During their conversation, Hibbs allegedly pulled a handgun out of his backpack and threatened, “Do you want me to get out with this?” The woman said she feared for her safety and believed she was in imminent danger of being hurt or killed.
The situation escalated when the woman’s boyfriend confronted Hibbs, leading to a physical altercation. The boyfriend suffered bruising and swelling under his eyes and a bloody nose and lip.
Memphis Police recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene and reviewed surveillance footage, which confirmed that Hibbs was the primary aggressor in the incident.
According to police documents, the altercation occurred on Hibbs’ birthday, adding a bizarre twist to the violent confrontation. Hibbs is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning to face the charges against him.
