Jill Biden urged to restore Rose Garden after ex-FLOTUS revamp – ‘Send Melania the bill’

The social media frenzy came after a petition was created appealing for the First Lady and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to undo the changes Mrs Trump made to the garden last August. According to reports, more than 40,000 people have signed the petition published on Change.org.

One social media user tweeted: “Should be restored to original, or at least previous. It was a delightful attribute. The present iteration is sterile and uninviting.”

Another Twitter user accused the former First Lady of having “no class”.

They wrote: “Jacqueline Kennedy who designed the Rose Garden had CLASS & this showed it.

“Jill Biden also has CLASS so she would be the right person to restore the Rose Garden. Then there is Melania Trump – NO CLASS!”

Former First Lady Jackie Kennedy oversaw a major renovation of the garden which was completed in 1962.

In a statement in July, Trump’s administration said Melania’s redesign would return the Rose Garden to its 1962 footprint.

However, the changes were met with heavy criticism as some of the colourful flowers featured in the garden were removed.

Among criticism of Melania’s redesign was the decision to remove 10 crab-apple trees – often wrongly referred to as cherry trees on social media.

Last year, the White House said the trees had not been destroyed but would be moved and replanted elsewhere on the grounds.

One Twitter user said the First Lady and Second Gentlemen should use pictures of the former Rose Garden to restore the landscape to its former colourful scene.

They wrote: “I think they should use pictures, drawings and the Groundskeeping staff memories to restore the Rose Garden. And send Melania Trump the bill.”

On Friday, Mrs Biden planted a linden tree on the north lawn of the White House to commemorate Arbor Day.

The annual event is dedicated to public tree planting in the US and other countries.

After planting the tree, a social media user urged Mrs Biden to start restoring the Rose Garden.

They tweeted: “And after this beautiful tree has been planted, how nice and great would it be if @FLOTUS undo the changes made to the Rose Garden by Melania Trump.”

The former First Lady was blasted by social media users in August for proceeding with the garden renovation despite the ongoing pandemic and protests in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.

According to a fact check report by Reuters last year, some of the widely circulated claims about Melania’s redesign on social media were false.

After the garden was unveiled to the public, Mrs Trump said: “Gardens are symbols of growth and hope.

“We celebrate this garden in the hope that future generations will not only enjoy – but also draw inspiration and strength – from this space where so much of our history has been shared.”

She also thanked the designers and architects who helped her create the new garden.
