An Indiana school bus driver, Kayla Pier, 38, is facing serious charges after allegedly operating her bus while drunk with more than 30 students onboard. The accusations stem from an incident that occurred on September 20, when students on the bus began to notice unusual behavior and driving patterns from Pier, reported by CBS News.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, the students reported their concerns about Pier’s driving to school officials, showing “exceptional judgment and courage.” The LaPorte Community School Corporation later praised the students for their bravery in stepping forward and reporting the troubling behavior to administrators.

The situation was flagged to the police on October 21, after the school corporation received a toxicology report indicating that Pier had tested positive for alcohol. Following the report, Pier was removed from her duties immediately, and she resigned on the same day, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

A months-long investigation led to Pier’s arrest on December 27, after she surrendered to police. She was charged with “operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent.” As of now, it is unclear whether Pier has pleaded guilty to the charges or retained an attorney for her defense.

In a statement, Police Captain Derek Allen commended the students for their swift actions in reporting the incident. “The courageous students aboard the bus who reported the behaviors of the accused are publicly commended,” Allen said. “Their attention to detail and prompt actions may have prevented a tragedy from occurring.”

The LaPorte Community School Corporation also expressed gratitude toward the students, recognizing the significant role their actions played in preventing what could have been a disastrous situation. The investigation and charges serve as a reminder of the critical importance of student safety and the responsibility school employees have toward the children they transport.
