Donald Trump’s odds to become re-elected as U.S. president in 2024 were slashed by bookmakers on Sunday, after he was acquitted by the Senate of impeachment for his alleged role in inciting the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Ladbrokes rates the former president as the 5-1 favorite to be the Republican nominee in 2024 and 8-1 to win the 2024 election. Before he was acquitted, Trump’s odds of winning the next election were 10-1. Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is the bookmaker’s 7-2 favorite, followed by President Joe Biden at 4-1 to win the election.
In betting terms, odds being lowered does not mean that chances have been lowered. It is in fact the opposite with lower odds meaning bookmakers thinking the chance of something happening is more likely.
Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes told Newsweek: “They say third time’s a charm, and with Trump acquitted and free for another run at the White House political punters have been piling into his 2024 odds.”
Trump’s chances at winning the presidency again dramatically improved at William Hill after Sunday’s verdict. Before he was acquitted, his odds were 18-1, but now they have gone down to 8-1.
Meanwhile at Betway, Trump’s odds are unchanged for 2024, because his odds of being convicted by the Senate were 1-100 — the shortest price you can offer — so it wouldn’t have affected his odds to win the next election. The bookmaker has given him the odds of 8-1 of becoming president again in 2024.
For Betfair, Trump’s price for 2024 has come in a little bit to 9-1 from 10-1, since to the betting platform, it was clear that he would not be convicted by the Senate.
Even though a majority of Senators voted to convict Trump on Sunday — including seven Republicans — a supermajority of 67 votes was required.
Trump faces several legal challenges relating to his actions in office and his business dealings, which may prove to be obstacles to him running again.
The former president has suggested he may run again, saying before the Senate vote that his movement “had only just begun”.
“In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!”, he said in a statement.
On Friday, vandals struck at the family home of Trump’s impeachment defense attorney Michael van der Veen over the weekend.
Pictures taken by local media show the word “TRAITOR” spray-painted in red across the entrance to the driveway of the Pennsylvania property. Arrows pointed toward the home.
Eggs were also thrown at the front door of the property, investigators told Newsweek.
