For most, encountering a black bear would be a heart-stopping experience. Even seasoned hikers can’t always predict a bear’s behavior. But for New Jersey resident Susan Kehoe, meeting a black bear is as ordinary as seeing a neighbor’s dog.

Susan lives in the backwoods of New Jersey, where black bears roam freely year-round, except during hibernation. Accepting that she shares her home with these animals, Susan has even befriended her local black bears.

In late May, Susan had one of her closest encounters while sitting on her porch. A curious black bear climbed up to join her, sitting down right across from her, both remaining incredibly calm. It’s a scene that’s almost unbelievable.

“Wow! This bear really does enjoy Susan’s company,” remarked a viewer. “That’s either a very brave bear or a very brave woman. In this case, I think trust and bravery go both ways!”

A commenter, @alloftheprettylights, noted, “Considering black bears are the scaredy-cats of bears, this is surprising! He must really like your vibes.” Indeed, most black bears avoid humans, often only approaching out of desperation during scarce resources.

For Susan, a passionate advocate for bear freedom and well-being, these encounters are part of her daily life. She remains cautious, never approaching the bears herself but displaying intelligence and confidence when they come to her. According to her TikTok, these interactions happen almost daily.

While Susan’s peaceful coexistence with black bears is unique, most black bears typically avoid human contact. If you encounter one, it’s recommended to talk calmly to help the bear recognize you as human. Engaging in conversation with a hiking buddy can also reduce surprise encounters.

Safety in black bear country involves preparation. If you see a bear, remain calm and back away slowly. If the bear follows you, stand your ground and make yourself appear larger. Bear spray can be a last resort if the bear doesn’t leave, but most black bears avoid escalating conflicts.

Susan’s story offers a rare glimpse into the possibility of harmony between humans and wildlife. Her calm demeanor and respect for the bears’ space highlight an impressive example of coexistence, reminding us that with the right approach, even the wildest encounters can be peacefully managed.
