Ana Navarro, known for her sharp political commentary, found herself at the center of controversy after sharing a behind-the-scenes moment with former President Barack Obama. The incident occurred during the third night of the Democratic National Convention when Navarro posted images of herself adjusting Obama’s necktie, a gesture that sparked an unexpected backlash.
In the photos uploaded to X on August 21, Navarro is seen leaning in to fix Obama’s tie while holding her small, brown dog, Chacha. In a second image, she appears to lean in and kiss the former president on the cheek. “Somebody had to fix his tie. So Chacha and I pitched in,” Navarro captioned the post, sharing the intimate moment with her followers.
While Navarro limited replies to her post, that didn’t stop viewers from expressing their opinions by quoting the original upload. Journalist April Reign was among the first to criticize Navarro’s actions and words, responding, “Girl, delete this. You are not that somebody, or whatever Aaliyah said. You know this is out of bounds, which is why you locked the responses.”
Reign didn’t hold back in her follow-up comment, saying, “Because what you NOT gon do is imply YOU needed to fix his tie when Michelle was right around the corner in the green room. You and your purse dog need to remember your place, and it’s not within tie distance of our POTUS. Like literally how dare you.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of boundaries. One user wrote, “A lot of y’all are unfamiliar with BOUNDARIES! Unless you are my husband’s personal assistant, close friend or his tailor, you DON’T FIX HIS TIE!! Ana Navarro knew good and well she was being inappropriate with Obama which is why she locked off her replies. Weirdo.”
However, not everyone agreed with the criticism. Some defended Navarro, arguing that Michelle Obama, known for her confidence and grace, wouldn’t be concerned about such a minor interaction. “If there is one thing Mrs. Obama is not, it’s insecure, so find something better to do!” one supporter commented. Another added, “Grow up people and get a life. He’s not your man; and I have 0 doubt, his wife is way too secure to be bothered.”
Navarro, who has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and a strong supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, was at the DNC as a host. Despite her Republican affiliation, Navarro has openly supported Harris, citing her admiration and personal friendship with the Vice President. In an interview with Variety, Navarro shared her excitement about the event, stating, “This is incredibly special for many reasons. Kamala Harris is my friend. I love her, and I admire her. She has captured lightning in a bottle.”
Reflecting on her journey, Navarro added, “I never thought, as a little refugee girl from Nicaragua, that I would ever be at a convention, much less be on stage at a convention. There is no larger celebration of democracy than a political convention. It’s an incredible privilege.”
While the moment with Obama may have stirred controversy, Navarro’s focus remains on her role in supporting a historic campaign and celebrating the democratic process.
