A renowned epidemiologist has sounded the ’emergency’ COVID-19 pandemic alarm for what he says is an ‘approaching disaster’.
One of the world’s leading epidemiologists has dropped a warning, stating that “we need to go into emergency mode” for what is approaching.
According to Dr. Michael Osterholm, a renowned epidemiologist, who spoke during his podcast on Monday, “We need to go into an emergency mode because of what is the approaching disaster with the B.1.1.7 variant”.
Researchers are concerned about the B.1.1.7 variant that was first identified in the UK because it is more contagious, causes a more severe infection, and current vaccines may be less effective against it.
The expert epidemiologist continued and recommended delaying second doses of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, and instead allocate those doses to people who haven’t received their first dose.
Dr. Osterholm suggested allocating second-round COVID-19 vaccine doses to people aged 65 years and older as they are at an increased chance of developing a life-threatening infection.
Here’s what Dr. Osterholm said, “I believe we’ve lost our opportunity to save many lives in the weeks ahead. There is no mistaking. The approaching dark clouds are coming.”
