2012 was a busy year for Sienna Miller, what with having a baby and starring in five different movies, but a year later one of those films, Just Like A Woman, is gearing up for its official release.
And from the looks of the latest clip, the cinematic tale is to be rather a deep and sensual one, as Sienna, 31, and her co-star Golshifteh Farahani get close after bathing in just their bras and leggings.
They play two women with a shared interest in belly-dancing, who escape their lives of monotony to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As Marilyn, Sienna is a 29-year old receptionist working for a computer repair company, while Golshifteh as Mona is a North African immigrant who runs her in-laws’ mini-market in Chicago.
Stuck under the rule of her husband Maourad’s authoritative mother, Mona decides to take off with Marilyn after they meet at her mini-market. But while Sienna’s character hopes to escape her husband Harvey and dreams of winning a contest held by a famous belly dancing company, Mona’s reasons are far more life-changing for she has left behind a dead mother-in-law who she may be accused of murdering.
Speaking to Pop Sugar about learning to belly-dance, Miller said: ‘It was complicated.’ ‘I was doing a play in London in the West End, so I was doing eight shows a week, obviously two days were matinee days, but all but one of my matinee days I was doing four hours of belly dancing and that was challenging for someone who isn’t particularly coordinated like myself.
‘But one of the coolest things about making films is you get these kinds of opportunities to learn a random skill, so now I can add belly dancing to my odd résumé.’ In the clip exclusively streamed on JustJared, Mona and Marilyn discuss the prospect of children, and how after five years, the former believes she is the reason she has not fallen pregnant.
Showing compassion to her friend, Marilyn hugs Mona and reassures her that the issue may well fall on the shoulders of her husband, but the North African explains that every man from her country can father a child, because her mother-in-law told her so. Like a cross-cultural Thelma And Louise, the friendship between these two women shows that even though they are from different worlds, they face a lot of the same emotions and problems any wife and budding mother does.
Last month Sienna joined her co-star Tim Guinee at the film’s New York premiere at The Crosby Street Hotel. Just Like A Woman – which is the first in a trilogy of English-language films aimed at exploring the changing relationship between Americans and the Arab world – was directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Rachid Bouchareb, will be released in cinemas, on VOD, and on iTunes on Friday July 5th.
