After over 30 years in the film industry, the celebrated actress still hasn’t achieved all of her professional goals. Winning an Academy Award did not help Nicole Kidman escape the pain of divorce from Tom Cruise. The Hollywood superstars put an end to their 10-year marriage in 2001, a year before Kidman picked up her first Oscar for her portrayal of author Virginia Woolf in The Hours, and although the trophy is one of the greatest accomplishments of her career, she admits she had mixed emotions about the big win.

“My relationship with success is a bit distant because I try to stay very much in the journey,” she explained on Wednesday (12Oct16) while speaking at the 60th BFI London Film Festival to promote her new film Lion. “Winning the Oscar was a turning point, but not in terms of my life as an actor, because it was incredibly validating, but it actually symbolised loneliness to me because I didn’t have anyone to share it with at that stage in my life. I was like ‘Wow, this means I need to get my act together and I want to fall in love’, so it was weird.” Decades into her celebrated career, Kidman reveals she still has many more professional goals to achieve, noting, “I would love to play a man at some point, I try to. I love the ability to morph. I seek out the furthermost parts of the world to go to because that is part of the journey.

Making people laugh hysterically in a slapstick feature is also on the cards for Nicole: “I’m drawn to black comedy and I’m drawn to satire, being Australian we like dry humour but I would love to do a screwball comedy,” she continued. Meanwhile her new drama Lion is already receiving high praise from the critics. The film follows Patel’s character Saroo, an adopted child from India, as he attempts to find his lost family in Calcutta 25 years after Kidman’s character takes him into her Australian home. Lion opens in theatres on 25 November (16).
