In a recent CBS Sunday Morning interview, Meghan Markle’s candid remarks have left the door wide open for potential future bombshells about her time in the British royal family. This joint interview with Prince Harry marks their first public conversation since their explosive sit-down with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, during which Meghan revealed she had contemplated suicide. This time, the couple highlighted a new initiative aimed at supporting parents of children affected by online harm.
Meghan’s revelation that she “hasn’t really scratched the surface” of her experiences has sparked speculation that more revelations could be forthcoming. Royal expert and editor Kate Mansey noted in The Times that Meghan’s comments suggest there is much more to be disclosed. “If Meghan is ever inclined to scrape a little further below the surface, there would be no end of publishers willing to offer exorbitant sums for her findings,” Mansey wrote.
This is not the first time that either Harry or Meghan has hinted at more untold stories. Last year, when Harry’s controversial memoir Spare was published, the Duke of Sussex suggested that the revelations in it were just the “tip of the iceberg.” The memoir caused immediate controversy, revealing private moments within the royal family, including physical altercations and tensions at family events. Harry admitted to The Telegraph that the original manuscript was twice the length of the final draft, with many details edited out to avoid irreparable damage to his relationships with his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.
The recent CBS interview also touched on Harry’s ongoing legal battles with British tabloids over allegations of phone hacking and other unlawful acts. Harry linked these invasions of privacy to his mother, Princess Diana, who he claimed was also a victim of such intrusions. He asserted that Diana was right to be paranoid about her privacy being violated, a sentiment that has added to his strained relationship with the royal family.
The rift between Harry and his family appears to be deepening. According to royal expert Tom Quinn, King Charles has had zero contact with his son. “Despite Harry’s attacks on the royal family, his father has avoided responding publicly, but privately, King Charles is furious. So much so that he is now refusing to take calls from his son,” Quinn told the Mirror. The King hasn’t seen his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, since June 2022, and Harry has cited security fears as a reason for not bringing his family back to the UK.
Quinn also mentioned that King Charles believes Harry should move past the family grievances for the sake of his children. However, the King feels that access to the grandchildren is being used as a bargaining chip, which he finds “unforgivable.” The situation is further complicated by Harry’s failed High Court challenge regarding his taxpayer-funded police protection, which was downgraded when he stepped back as a senior royal.
The timing of the CBS interview, released on Meghan’s 43rd birthday, adds another layer to the ongoing saga. Unlike previous years, there were no public birthday wishes from William, Kate, or King Charles, highlighting the strained relationships. This contrasts sharply with two years ago when both William and Charles extended birthday greetings to Meghan.
Looking ahead, the Sussexes have plans for increased public engagement. They are set to tour Colombia, following an invitation from the country’s vice-president, Francia Márquez. This visit, focused on creating safer environments for children, comes amid their vocal concerns about security. Harry also has upcoming commitments with the Invictus Games in Canada and Birmingham.
Meghan, meanwhile, is embarking on a new venture with her brand, American Riviera Orchard. The brand launched with a teaser video on social media, but it remains unclear what products will be offered. Initial hints include homemade jam and dog biscuits, gifted to friends and promoted on social media.
