The very first day of school can be tough for parents and kids – just ask Suri Cruise’s Mum, Katie Holmes. According to insiders at Grazia, Katie described Suri’s first day at Avenues School in Manhattan as “gut wrenching”. It’s said that Suri’s education was one of the biggest areas of contention when her parents, Katie and Tom Cruise, split up earlier this year.
Tom wanted to send her to a Scientology learning facility, but Katie was keen for her to have a regular education. The source said “Katie was in tears when she dropped Suri off. It marked the end of her battle with Tom. Having to wave Suri off after all that they’ve been through recently was gut wrenching.”
Dad Tom is currently in London working on a film, and Katie asked him to stay away on Suri’s first day so the child wasn’t faced with a huge crowd. “Katie knew there would be a circus that morning, so she asked Tom not to come. She wanted to make sure Suri felt as confident as possible on her first day.” According to Tom’s lawyer, Bert Fields, Tom calls Suri up to twice a day, and is “a constant presence in her life” despite the fact that he hasn’t seen his daughter for over a month. Suri was spotted crying as she left the Greenwich hotel earlier in the week, whilst Tom is rumoured to be dating a string of stars including Cameron Diaz.
