Kate Middleton might have her own internal opinions on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but she’s never spoken publicly about them. Recently, she “iced out” a family member who made negative comments about Meghan.
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle aren’t exactly best friends. The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex first met in 2016 after Meghan and Prince Harry were set up on a blind date. As Harry and Meghan’s relationship grew serious, Meghan met the family.
Though things didn’t instantly click between Meghan and Kate, the Princess of Wales has always maintained a polite and professional demeanor. However, when a family member publicly criticized Meghan’s controversial decisions, Kate was left “horrified” and has since “iced out” her relative, told The New York Post.
Kate and Meghan don’t have to be best friends, but Kate wants to avoid being seen as the one creating problems. Among the royal family, Kate is arguably the least controversial member. She avoids negative comments and scandals.
Earlier this year, Kate’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, appeared on Celebrity Big Brother UK, a move that was already questionable. His comments about Meghan, along with his apparent use of Kate’s name to boost his fame, left Kate and other family members no choice but to distance themselves from him. On the show, Goldsmith suggested that Harry and Meghan should lose their royal titles.
“It was no secret that Gary going into the Big Brother house wasn’t a particularly welcomed move,” a source told Express. “Gary was quite surprised by the reaction to his appearance on the show, especially afterward… Gary is very close to Carole, so it’s not something that’s going to cause any long-term damage, but there has been some distance placed between the information divulged.” Gary is reportedly spending some time in Ibiza away from his family to let the dust settle.
Kate’s reaction makes sense given her reluctance to make any public comments about Harry and Meghan. While issues between the Wales and Sussex couples are widely known, they mostly stem from Harry and Prince William’s problems and have less to do with Kate and Meghan’s relationship.
In Meghan and Harry’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan described Kate as “a good person” and didn’t elaborate further. While the two women aren’t friends, there doesn’t seem to be any genuine bad blood between them. They appear to be caught up in the issues between their husbands. It’s unlikely that Meghan and Kate will ever become close, but they can at least co-exist — and it’s fair that Kate was displeased with her uncle’s comments.
