In a surprising move, former First Lady Melania Trump took to social media to defend her nude modeling from over 25 years ago, sharing a video on X (formerly Twitter). In the video, she addressed media scrutiny she feels is being directed at her past work, despite no current significant controversy surrounding it. The timing of her defense raised eyebrows, as it comes during her husband Donald Trump’s latest presidential run.

Melania, who previously modeled nude twice—once in 1995 for a now-defunct French magazine and again in 2000 for British GQ—spoke passionately about her decision to celebrate the human body through fashion photography. These photo shoots took place long before she married Donald Trump and years before his time in office.

In the video, Melania posed a direct question: “Why do I stand proudly behind my nude modeling work? The more pressing question is: Why has the media chosen to scrutinize my celebration of the human form in a fashion photo shoot? Are we no longer able to appreciate the beauty of the human body? Throughout history, master artists have revered the human shape, evoking profound emotions and admiration. We should honor our bodies and embrace the timeless tradition of using art as a powerful means of self-expression.”

While her nude modeling did attract some attention during the 2016 presidential campaign—especially when the New York Post published several of the images—it wasn’t a major issue in the 2020 election cycle. Moreover, there has been no clear indication that the media is revisiting the topic as part of the current 2024 race, making Melania’s decision to bring it up now somewhat perplexing.

Adding to the curiosity, Melania has remained notably quiet during the 2024 election season, even offering limited responses to key events. When the first assassination attempt on her husband occurred, she only issued a brief letter, and she has remained silent regarding the second. For many observers, it’s unexpected that she chose to speak out about her modeling career rather than more pressing topics.

While Melania’s defense of her work doesn’t come across as a cause for public concern, the timing of her statements is unusual. The former First Lady has often been a private figure, making this rare public address all the more notable.
