The fitness world mourns the loss of Richard Simmons, a beloved icon known for his infectious energy and dedication to helping others lead healthier lives. His brother, Lenny Simmons, confirmed to PEOPLE that Richard’s death was accidental, putting an end to the speculation surrounding the fitness guru’s sudden passing.
On Wednesday, August 21, the Simmons family spokesperson, Tom Estey, released a statement to PEOPLE providing more details about the circumstances of Richard’s death. Estey revealed, “This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office. The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed.” He added, “The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”
Richard Simmons was discovered on July 13 by his longtime housekeeper, just one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Despite initial concerns, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that there was no foul play involved. However, the exact cause of death was initially deferred pending additional tests.
Earlier reports suggested that Simmons had suffered a fall at his home on July 12, after experiencing dizziness. He reportedly mentioned to his housekeeper that he might seek medical attention if his condition did not improve the following day. Tragically, he did not get the chance.
“The world has truly lost an angel,” Estey told PEOPLE, reflecting on the immense impact Simmons had on those around him.
Just two days before his death, Simmons spoke exclusively to PEOPLE, sharing his plans to celebrate his 76th birthday with his characteristic humor. “I’ll blow out a candle, but the candle will probably be on a zucchini,” he joked, referencing his vegetarian lifestyle. Despite his playful tone, Simmons expressed gratitude for his life and the opportunity to help others. “I feel good! I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day. I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people,” he said.
Throughout his career, Richard Simmons was a beloved pop culture figure and a source of inspiration for countless individuals. He made regular appearances on talk shows like Late Night with David Letterman and was a fixture at events like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. His fitness empire included more than 50 workout videos, most notably the “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” series, which sold over 22 million copies. He also promoted healthy eating and portion control with successful programs like Deal-a-Meal.
Lenny Simmons hopes that people will remember his brother not with sadness but with joy. “I don’t want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives,” he shared with PEOPLE. “He truly cared about people. He called, wrote, and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad,” Lenny added, “Celebrate his life.”
