Actor Johnny Depp enjoyed a whirlwind romance after he first met his now ex-wife, Amber Heard when the pair worked together in 2009 on the film The Rum Diary.
However, the duo didn’t start dating until some time between 2011 and 2012 following the separation of Johnny and his longterm partner, Vanessa Paradis.
Just a few years after they began dating, Amber was seen wearing a huge diamond rock on a red carpet, with Johnny, 57, telling news crews “it’s probably a dead giveaway, isn’t it?” when he was also seen with a ring on his finger.
The Hollywood couple went on to wed at a private ceremony held in the grounds of their lavish Los Angeles home before jetting off to his private island in the Bahamas for a second ceremony.
Despite their wedding taking place in February 2015, the pair officially filed for divorce on May 23, 2016 – with Amber claiming that Depp had been physically abusive during their strained relationship, showing the court a photograph of a bruise on her face.
In court documents obtained by ABC News, she said: “There also have been several prior incidents of domestic violence with Johnny, in particular, there was one severe incident in December 2015 when I truly feared that my life was in danger.”
However, Johnny strongly denied these claims, with a lawyer for the actor stating Heard, was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse”.
A lawyer representing Amber during their divorce said: “Amber is simply a victim of domestic violence, and none of her actions are motivated by money.”
Their divorce was officially finalised in 2017, with the pair free to find love once more, with Amber being offered a settlement estimated to be around £5million – later donating the fee to charity.
In a joint statement, the former flames said: “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.
“Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”
But what were some of the biggest scandals to come out of their reasoning for splitting when their relationship claims emerged during the libel battle? Daily Star takes a look back from everything including smeared blood across walls, Johnny’s finger being chopped off and poo being left on a bed.
During a High Court libel trial in 2020, grim claims about their marriage became public knowledge with Heard claiming that he once trashed their home in Australia, causing an estimated £150,000 worth of damage.
She said: “There was blood everywhere,” adding that it went “all the way down the stairs and stairwell”, and “blood on the walls, lampshades and everywhere with written messages.”
While giving evidence in the trial that was sparked when The Sun’s executive editor, Dan Wooton claimed Depp was a “wife-beater”, the 34-year-old actress alleged that Depp said: “I’m going to f**king kill you and f**k your corpse”.
In a text which is believed to have been sent to actor Paul Bettany, Depp said: “I will f**k her burnt corpse”.
Heard later accused the Pirates of the Caribbean actor of attempting to write her name while “peeing on the walls,” a claim which Depp’s former estate manager claimed was false.
However, the alleged final straw in their turbulent marriage was when Johnny found human faeces in their marital bed, which he claims could have been left by Heard, an allegation she denies.
He told the court: “It was a mystery grumpy, if you will, left in the bed. It was not left by a 3lb or 4lb dog.
“I was convinced that it was either Miss Heard herself or one of her cohorts involved in leaving human faeces on the bed.”
This incident led Depp to nickname his wife “Amber Turd” when speaking to his closest confidantes, something he later laughed about.
A judge later ruled that neither Amber nor her associates were responsible for the poo, but their Yorkshire terrier dog was the culprit.
However, one of the most shocking allegations to emerge following their divorce was Johnny claiming that Heard has “cut his finger off” during an explosive row in Australia.
It’s said that in March 2015, Depp was left requiring urgent hospital treatment after suffering from a severed finger.
“Ms Heard threw a vodka bottle at me that cut my finger off when the bottle exploded on the bar on which my hand was resting,” he told London’s High Court.
He went on to say that while informing his wife he had broken his sobriety due to the actions of their relationship, she grabbed the bottle from him before launching it “as hard as she could” from a close distance.
“The bottle smashed against my hand, which was resting on the marble top of the bar, severing the top of my finger and fracturing multiple bones,” he recalled.
However, it was said in court during their libel by a lawyer that Depp severed his finger when he was slamming a plastic phone against a wall
Both Amber and Johnny strongly deny any claims of physical abuse made against them.
