Miami police have released bodycam footage capturing the immediate aftermath of a devastating crash in downtown Miami last month that left two people dead. The footage comes as 24-year-old social media model Maecee Lathers faces multiple charges related to the incident.
According to a police report, on the morning of August 10, Lathers was allegedly high on drugs and speeding in her white 2018 Mercedes down North Miami Avenue. She reportedly ran a red light at Eighth Street and accelerated to nearly 80 mph in a 30-mph zone.
The crash occurred when Lathers’ out-of-control vehicle slammed into a black 2020 Range Rover traveling west. The impact caused the Range Rover to collide with a silver 2012 Suzuki driven by Abraham Ismael, who was on his way to work with his fiancée, Juanita Hernandez, and a friend, Jesus Rubio. Tragically, Ismael, a father of a teenage son, was pulled from the wreckage and later died at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Rubio was pronounced dead at the scene, and Hernandez suffered severe injuries, including facial and arm lacerations. The driver of the Range Rover, a 23-year-old man, sustained only minor injuries.
The released bodycam footage shows the chaotic scene as first responders arrived. Lathers, topless and handcuffed, can be seen lying on the ground, screaming in pain. According to bystanders and police, she had attempted to walk away from the crash and was incoherent when questioned, even claiming to be a time traveler. “She’s on tusi,” one officer is heard saying, referring to the party drug pink cocaine. “She’s like, Oh, I’m from the future.”
Lathers, who was driving with a suspended license, initially posted bond and was placed under house arrest. However, on Tuesday, she was sent back to jail after prosecutors added two DUI manslaughter charges to her case. Toxicology reports revealed multiple drugs in her system, but no alcohol.
In total, Lathers now faces 10 criminal charges, including vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license. Her Instagram, where she describes herself as an “entrepreneur,” remains public. One post shows her posing in front of a white Mercedes similar to the one involved in the crash, though comments on the post have been turned off.
As the legal process continues, the families of the victims are left mourning the tragic loss of their loved ones in a crash that could have been prevented.
