Ariana Grande recently addressed the buzz surrounding a viral interview clip where her voice suddenly changed mid-conversation. The Grammy-winning singer downplayed the significance of the incident, explaining that it’s a common occurrence for those who frequently transform their voices.

“That’s a normal thing that people do,” Grande, 31, stated in response to the video. She emphasized that as a performer with a large vocal range, varying her voice is routine.

“I did just spend a long time playing a character every single day,” Ariana elaborated during her appearance on the July 9 episode of the Shut Up Evan podcast, referring to her role as Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie musical. “Muscle memory is a real thing,” she added.

The “Thank U, Next” songstress also highlighted the double standards she perceives in the entertainment industry, particularly when male actors stay in character unintentionally after filming. “Sure, people make jokes here and there as well, but it’s always after the fact, ‘Oh wow, how dedicated to his craft! What an amazing transformation! He’s a brilliant performer!’ But then it’s like, god forbid I sneeze like Glinda,” she remarked, told Daily Mail.

This isn’t the first time Grande has defended her changing vocal inflections. She previously responded to comments on a TikTok video, writing, “I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing. I’ve always done this BYE.”

Grande’s comments shed light on the demands and nuances of vocal performance, especially for actors and singers who frequently switch between roles and styles. Her explanation underscores the importance of understanding and respecting the techniques artists use to maintain their craft.

As she prepares for her role in Wicked, Grande continues to demonstrate her versatility and dedication to her art, using her voice not just to sing, but to embody the characters she portrays. The viral clip serves as a reminder of the intricate skills involved in professional singing and acting, and Grande’s response highlights the often overlooked challenges artists face in their careers.
