Selena Gomez is beaming with excitement after the debut of her first-ever Spanish-speaking role in Emilia Perez, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9. During a post-screening Q&A, the 32-year-old actress shared why this film is so meaningful to her and how it has given her the chance to connect with her Latin roots in a powerful way.

“It was really interesting because I ultimately ended up developing a character who is very similar to myself,” Gomez revealed. In the film, she plays Jessi Del Monte, the wife of drug cartel leader Emilia Perez, portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascon. The film follows Perez’s attempt to fake her own death, with Gomez’s character caught in the center of the action.

What makes the role even more personal for Gomez is its connection to her heritage. “I’m really glad that we were able to make her Latin American because that’s who I am,” she said, emphasizing how the film will resonate with Latin communities across America. She noted how relatable the movie is, stating, “I think it’s also everywhere.”

Despite her deep connection to the project, Gomez admitted that working in Spanish presented its own challenges. While she can understand the language, she quipped, “Do not ask me to answer.” The Love On singer, who also sings in the film, confessed, “I was so nervous,” but felt proud that she was able to “pull it off.”

Gomez’s excitement for the role has been building for months. In August, she shared an emotional video on Instagram, where she learned she had landed the part. “I can’t believe I got the movie! I’m so gonna cry right now,” the Only Murders in the Building star said through happy tears.

This role not only marks a new chapter in Gomez’s career but also highlights her pride in her Latin identity.
