A royal author has revealed the deep emotional impact on Prince William after learning that Kate Middleton has been diagnosed with cancer, a news that reportedly “wobbled him.”

On March 22, Kate publicly shared the heartbreaking news in a video, revealing her battle with cancer just after King Charles had also been diagnosed with the disease. The news left Prince William devastated, according to royal author Robert Jobson.

“It was devastating for him,” Jobson told Us Weekly. In his newly released book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen, Jobson described William’s immediate reaction to the news, saying the Prince of Wales felt “a lump in [his] throat” and an “empty feeling in his stomach” as Kate shared her diagnosis with the world.

“It wobbled him,” Jobson said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Since her diagnosis, Kate has largely stayed out of the public eye, focusing on her recovery. In a letter released three months later, she assured the public that she was “making good progress” but acknowledged the challenges of her treatment, noting that she has “good days and bad days.”

Kate made her first public appearance after announcing her diagnosis at the Trooping the Colour ceremony, and she was later seen at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Throughout Kate’s battle with cancer, William has been dealing with additional pressures, including his ongoing feud with his estranged brother, Prince Harry. Former royal butler Grant Harrold recently suggested that the brothers may be in private talks to resolve their differences. “Of course, a lot has happened, and a lot has to be resolved and sorted out. This may well be on track, but it may not have even been addressed yet,” Harrold said.

A source previously told PEOPLE that William has been a constant support for Kate, ensuring she doesn’t feel isolated during her health battle. The source described William as a “very reliable, strong person” who is always “right beside” Kate. “This is about supporting her and her feeling supported. It is a joint effort. She doesn’t feel isolated at all,” the insider said.

As Kate continues her journey through treatment, the royal family remains united in their support, with William standing as a pillar of strength for his wife during this challenging time.
