Ashley Marie Bredhold and Brent Michael Bredhold, both 38, from Evansville, Indiana, are facing homicide charges in connection with the tragic death of their 12-year-old daughter, Alice Ruby Bredhold. According to a report by Law and Crime on Thursday, August 8, 2024, the investigation into Alice’s July 4 death has revealed alarming details of neglect.
On the morning of July 4, Alice was found dead on the bedroom floor of the family’s home on South New York Avenue. Alice, who had diabetes, passed away due to diabetic ketoacidosis—a preventable complication of diabetes resulting from prolonged high blood sugar levels. This condition, as reported by the Vanderburgh County Coroner, is a clear indication of inadequate management of Alice’s diabetes.
Affidavits obtained by NBC affiliate WFIE indicate that Alice’s diabetes required diligent care, but she was reportedly left to manage her life-threatening condition without the necessary support from her parents. The investigation revealed that the state’s Department of Child Services (DCS) had contacted the Bredhold family multiple times after concerns were raised by Alice’s school. Reports indicated that her blood sugar levels were frequently alarmingly high while she was at school, prompting DCS intervention. However, it remains unclear how these warnings were handled before Alice’s tragic death.
When authorities arrived at the Bredhold residence following Alice’s death, they found the home in deplorable condition, allegedly filled with garbage and insects, further compounding the neglect that Alice endured.
Alice attended Evans Elementary School, where she was an active and beloved member of the community. She played the cello in the school orchestra, loved reading, and was a passionate participant in a local book club. Her curiosity extended to a youth team dedicated to the scientific exploration of rocks, fossils, and minerals. “Alice was naturally artistic and creative, and enjoyed doing crafts and drawing,” her obituary reads. “She loved being with her family and spending time with friends. Alice will be remembered for her outgoing, energetic, and friendly spirit. She will be deeply missed.”
After nearly a month of investigation, Ashley and Brent Bredhold were arrested on August 7 and charged with neglect of a dependent causing death, a first-degree felony under Indiana law. Both are currently held in the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $100,000 bond each, with their initial hearings scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Vanderburgh Circuit Court.
