The Columbia Police Department (CPD) has launched an investigation following the discovery of a body near a Food Lion on Thursday. The body was located on a footpath between the grocery store and a wooded area on Ashley Street, just off Fairfield Road.

Deputy Chief Melron Kelly confirmed the discovery and stated that, at this time, there are no signs of foul play. However, the identity of the deceased remains unknown. “We are working diligently to identify the individual and determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic discovery,” Kelly remarked.

The CPD is collaborating closely with the Columbia Fire Department to recover the body safely. Additionally, the Richland County Coroner’s Office is involved in the investigation and will be responsible for positively identifying the deceased. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Friday morning, which may provide more clarity on the cause of death and assist in the identification process.

As the investigation unfolds, local authorities urge anyone with potential information to come forward. The case remains open, and while no foul play is suspected at this time, the CPD is committed to thoroughly exploring all possibilities.

The community has expressed concern and curiosity about the situation, given the location near a popular shopping area. The police have assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to ensure the investigation is handled with care and sensitivity.
