A drunk driving suspect, Madisyn Forsyth, 33, left a path of chaos and destruction in Shelby Township, hitting multiple vehicles, including two police cruisers, and nearly running down civilians, according to local police.
Forsyth was arrested on July 21 on charges of operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding police, and felonious assault with a dangerous weapon. She was arraigned in district court two days later and released after posting a $500 bond, a decision that has left Police Chief Robert Shelide infuriated.
“I was stunned to hear that Forsyth was allowed to leave after paying such a low bond after all the damage and danger she inflicted,” Shelide stated.
The incident began when officers responded to reports of a vehicle striking several parked cars near Ruann and Connie. Upon locating the vehicle, officers attempted to stop it, but Forsyth allegedly rammed the patrol car. A second police cruiser and officer intervened, only for Forsyth to strike that vehicle as well.
As she attempted to flee, Forsyth drove aggressively toward civilians, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. She then drove through backyards in an attempt to evade the officers, eventually coming to a stop after hitting a post. Police say Forsyth appeared intoxicated at the time of her arrest.
Officers conducted a field sobriety test and administered a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT), which resulted in a .25 blood alcohol content. Forsyth was then taken into custody.
“Shelby Township Police are committed to protecting and serving our community from this type of reckless behavior,” Chief Shelide emphasized. “Our department will continue to have zero tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
Chief Shelide also expressed relief that no one was injured despite the suspect’s dangerous actions. “I am just as shocked that this driver wreaked havoc in Shelby Township causing damage to multiple vehicles before driving right at innocent civilians, thankful no one was injured.”
The incident highlights the serious risks posed by drunk driving and the challenges law enforcement faces in preventing such dangerous behavior. The Shelby Township Police Department remains dedicated to enforcing laws against driving under the influence and ensuring the safety of its community.
