A tragic shooting at a barbecue in Rochester’s Maplewood Park resulted in the deaths of two women and left five others injured, according to police. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday when rounds were fired from multiple weapons, sending shockwaves through the upstate New York community.

Hundreds of people, including children, were present in the park when the chaos erupted. At a news conference, Rochester police confirmed that five people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The two women who lost their lives were identified as Tyasia Manning, 25, and Phylicia Council, 34, told AP News.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans expressed deep sorrow over the loss of these innocent lives. Manning was a city employee dedicated to helping young people “become their best selves,” according to Evans. “These were innocent victims,” he emphasized.

Mayor Evans painted a heart-wrenching picture of the crime scene, noting the presence of a stroller and abandoned shoes. “Our people, our residents, should be able to enjoy the summer in a park, period,” he declared. “But all too often, we have individuals in this community that are unmitigated cowards — that are OK with shooting women. And two of those women lost their life.”

He also lamented the tarnishing of Maplewood Park’s reputation, a place known for its beautiful views and events. “Maplewood Park is known for its beautiful views, beautiful events. … It should not be remembered by being a place that is marred by violence,” Evans said.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The police are urging anyone with information or video footage from the scene to come forward. They can contact the Major Crimes Unit at 585-428-7157 or email [email protected].

The community is left grappling with the senseless act of violence that shattered a peaceful gathering. The mayor’s plea underscores the collective grief and frustration felt by many. “Our residents should not have to fear for their lives while enjoying a summer evening in the park,” Evans reiterated. The search for justice continues as authorities work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to account and restore peace to the community.
