Evil killer Chris Watts ‘still in touch with mistress’ he murdered family to be with

Evil killer Chris Watts is still in touch with the mistress he murdered his family to be with, an inmate has claimed.

The 35-year-old is currently serving a life sentence for the brutal murders of pregnant wife Shanann, 34, and their daughter Bella, four, and Celeste, three.

Lover Nichol Kessinger, 32, moved house and changed her identity after the shocking nature of Watts’ crimes was revealed.

But a prisoner who served time at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin, where Watts is serving his sentence, claims Kessinger is still writing to him to “clear some things up”.

David Carter told the MailOnline: “He told me she said that she needed to speak to him to clear some things up.

“He wouldn’t tell me exactly what she had said.”

Watts hatched a warped plan to kill his family so he could be with Ms Kessinger, 32, in August 2018, in Frederick, Colorado, in a crime that shocked the world.

The pair met while working together and Watts told her that he was separated from his wife. When he finally confessed to the grisly murders he told police it was because he wanted to be with Ms Kessinger.

Watts told pen pal Cheryln Cadle in 2019 that he was still in love with the mistress and believed that some of the letters he received in prison were from her writing under assumed names.

Carter, who was jailed for meth possession and stealing money from his employers before he was released in February, said Watts made the claims in September 2020.

Watts claimed that prison authorities discovered their correspondence and punished him by suspending his email account and carefully monitoring all his mail.

Carter added: “He wasn’t supposed to have any contact with her, but she initiated it by writing to him.”

Wisconsin Department of Corrections spokesman John Beard said he couldn’t comment on the claims.

A Netflix true-crime documentary covering the murders called American Murder: The Family Next Door was released last year.

It featured archive footage including home movies, social media posts, text message and police recordings.

There was never any suggestion that Ms Kessinger knew Watts intended to kill his family but she was inundated with hate mail and has been living in hiding in the past two and a half years.

Carter, 34, said Watts told him he killed his wife because he did not want to pay child support, did not want the son they were expecting and feared Shanann would take their house in a divorce.

“I don’t buy any of that though,” the former inmate said. “I couldn’t ever kill my entire family just because I didn’t want a child or didn’t want to pay child support.”

Watts is serving five life sentences plus 48 years without the possibility of parole for the crime
