Lorraine Kelly heartbroken over mother’s guilt for daughter killed in Dunblane shooting

Lorraine Kelly shared her heartbreak, as the mother of five-year-old Dunblane shooting victim Victoria Clydesdale opened up on her guilt over the tragic event.

The host, who covered the massacre on TV the day after it occurred, shared her memories of the horrific day 25 years ago.

With it being a place she knew well, she could not comprehend the crime and details that would emerge in an event that changed the lives of many forever.

Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 children and one teacher at Dunblane Primary near Stirling in March 1996 before killing himself in what still remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history.

The gunman was armed with four legally-held handguns during the horrifying attack on a group of young schoolchildren aged between just 5 and 6-years-old, which also left 15 injured.

Now 25 years on, ITV’s Lorraine revisited the horrific details of that day, and headed back to Dunblane.

She spoke with a paramedic who was one of the first on the scene, before speaking with relatives of the victims.

Lynne spoke for the first time on TV about the heartbreaking death of her daughter Victoria, who was one of the 16 children who lost their life.

She shared her grief and her guilt, as on the day of the shooting she almost kept Victoria off school over a rash she had on her arm – but Victoria wanted to go in.

Loving her gym class and knowing she had it that day, the little one insisted she be allowed to go in just hours before her murder.

Lorraine urged her to realise she should not feel guilty, sharing her upset that she could not comfort her as Lynne broke down.

Lynne said: “I remember I spotted a rash on her arm and her stomach as well. I thought what if it’s measles or chickenpox or something like that, that could go to the rest of them?

“She says, ‘mum no, I’ve got to go, I’ve got gym today’. Gym was her favourite subject, I had to let her go. I got her to promise after school we’d go see the nurse.

“I have relived that day over and over again, because she had gym that day, she wanted to go. So I’ve got the guilt of actually giving into her as well.”

Lorraine told her: “But you shouldn’t, I know it’s easy for me to say but you really shouldn’t. It’s alright. I’m so sorry and I feel dreadful that I can’t give you a cuddle.”

As she left, Lorraine shared: “I found talking to Lynne really heartbreaking, because she has been carrying this guilt around with her for 25 years.

“There is only one person responsible for what happened and she shouldn’t feel guilty, and I just wish I could take that from her.”
