No one likes cutting onions – and not just because they make you cry.
They’re not the easiest vegetable to chop up. However, since they’re a key ingredient in a number of dishes, you’ll need to know how to prepare them properly.
And one woman has divided opinions online for the way she cuts hers.
Lyndsey shared the technique that “just makes sense” on TikTok, where she’s known as @lyndseymjames, in a video that has been viewed more than 870,000 times.
She said: “I thought I’d quickly come on and show you how I cut onions because ,apparently, the way I cut onions is weird, but to me it just makes sense.
“There’s none of this slicing it and then you know holding it and ah can’t be dealing with that.”
She says you’ll want to take off the outer layer of the onion and then cut off one side so it can be laid flat on the chopping board – but the top should still have the root attached.
Then, she demonstrates making incisions all the way down the onion from the top to the bottom, making sure to keep a 1cm gap from the root, so that the veg stays in one piece – as seen in the video above.
“So, you’re literally cutting segments like an orange,” she explained.
Then, once it “looks like a flower”, place it on its side and make sliced going in the opposite direction – and voila, you have sliced onion.
“Why would you do it any other way?” she asks.
Since being shared, the video has been liked more than 100,000 times and received more than 1,600 comments from impressed viewers.
