Baby died of traumatic head injuries after van hit pram leaving mum fighting for life

A five-month-old baby tragically died and his mum is still fighting for her life after a van left the road and collided with his pram in a horror crash in Cambridgeshire.

Little Louis’ provisional cause of death was given as a traumatic head injury, an inquest at Lawrence Court heard on Thursday, February 11.

Police said the incident occurred around 3.50pm when his mother, Rachael Thorold, was pushing Louis in a pram on the pavement of the A10 near Waterbeach.

As the mum pushed her son, a grey Mazda 2 collided with a white Renault Master van and the vehicle left the road.

The van then collided with the pram, killing Louis, and seriously injuring Ms Thorold, who was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Devasted Chris Thorold, Louis’ dad, paid a heartbreaking tribute to his baby boy who had a “joyful” smile, CambridgeshireLive reports.

He also said his son’s laughter will “never leave” him and added that he made him the “happiest people in the world”.

In the tribute, Chris revealed that Rachel is “fighting to stay with us” and said he is “praying that she will make it through”.

Chris said: “I cannot describe how heartbroken we are that you are gone. You are such a happy little boy and your joyful smile and laughter will never leave us.

“Your ma-ma is fighting to stay with us and we are praying that she will make it through.

“You will always be in our hearts and do not worry, I am taking care of all your animals.

“We love you so much and we know you will now be safe with Granny, Grandad and Great Grandpa in Heaven.”

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision or moments leading up to it.

Anyone with information should call 101 or visit www.cambs.police.uk/report quoting incident 278 of January 22.

A pre-inquest review hearing for Louis’ death was listed for April 26.
