She appears to be taking after the queen of pop with her own set of very expensive mouth bling. Katy Perry took to the red carpet at the 2013 MTV VMAs wearing a diamond encrusted grill spelling out the title of her hit single Roar on Sunday night in Brooklyn, New York.
The piece of gaudy jewellery comes less than a week after Madonna sported a similar set of over-the-top braces in Rome. But the 28-year-old pop singer’s new set of teeth jewellery is also clearly a part of her overall Roar vision, as she arrived to the red carpet in a provocative leopard print slinky dress.
According to the New York Daily News, Perry spent over a $1,000 for the diamond grill and was designed by celebrity jewellery maker Paul (The Ice Man) Wall. Wall claims the Firework singer ordered the expensive teeth adornments in anticipation of her debut live performance of Roar at the VMAs. Nonetheless, the under-30 star’s use of the formerly hip hop dominated style is much more apropos than it was for Madonna, 55, whose heyday was nearly three decades ago.
And Katy’s performance at the awards show signifies her status as the current queen of pop. The hitmaker is the headliner for the evening with her own special stage, to debut Roar live after a record breaking week of internet sales. The singer will perform the song under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. But her fellow performers won’t be given the same treatment.
Lady Gaga, Justin TImberlake (and ‘N Sync), and Ryan Lewis and Macklemore will be hitting the stage at the Barclay Centre, where the main festivities will be taking place. Though UsWeekly reports that Perry was initially supposed to perform on top of the bridge. But the city of Brooklyn would not grant the awards show the proper permits for the concert.
Meanwhile, all the special attention is well-deserved, as Perry is currently the reigning monarch of the charts. Her single Roar sold an astounding 557,000 digital downloads in its first week alone, which beat out Gaga’s Applause, from her new album Artpop, by over 300,000 downloads. Last week’s sales blasts past Perry’s previous record of 509,000 for 2010’s Firework, according to Billboard. Roar is the vanguard single for Perry’s upcoming album, Prism, which is due to hit stores on October 22.
