Are you Experiencing Winter Blues?

There are many women who go through occasional periods of mild depression, however during winters these winter blues (seasonal affective disorder) become serious, and can be easily curable.

Every year ten million women experience at least long bouts of mild depression in their lives due to seasonal affective disorder. At least women above the age of 30 suffer from seasonal affective disorder. The symptoms of SAD in women are depression, loss of energy, increase sleep and sleepiness, overeating, weight gain, difficulty in concentration and processing information, anxiety, insomnia, irritability and weight loss.

The causes of SAD are unknown but heredity, age and the chemical makeup of body are the roots of SAD among women. Sunlight is very important as a seasonal diagnosis. Research also shows that less sunlight can disrupt circadian rhythms which regulate your body’s internal clock leading to mild depression.

Women suffering from mild depression must consult their health professional. There is an antidepressant type of medication which may help reduce or eliminate the symptoms of SAD.

In order to get rid of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) combined with treatment with either medication or light therapy, there are other things that women can do to cope with SAD. It involves health related regular exercises, use of special day lights in your home to make the body and brain thing.

Take plenty of vitamins which will help the body produce endorphins. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms it is wise to contact your doctor to talk about possible treatment:

  • Changes in your sleep pattern, insomnia.
  • A loss of appetite.
  • Feelings of depression.
  • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Feeling stressed all the time.

Seasonal affective disorder treatment is available for anyone but it is important that women must speak to a trained professional before they start any type of treatment at all.
